Story about a Korean emperor Lee Gon (Lee Min-ho) who tries to close the doors to a parallel world which was opened by demons who were unleashed by a deity into the human world, and a detective Jung Tae-eul (Kim Go-eun) who tries to protect the people and the one she loves.
This is a drama I’ve been waiting for for one reason. It’s the comeback for Lee Min-ho. So, to say that i was super excited when the first episode got updated on Netflix is an understatement. Not gonna lie, it stated out a bit confusing because of the jumping between two worlds and you are not sure where you are at first but once you get it, you get it.
It started with a man with blood all over his shirt and handcuff on his wrist telling a story at the police station and his is name is Lee Rim. he tells the story of of a flute made of bamboo that was received by King sinmun from the dragon king of the east sea. When the flute is played, enemies will be defeated, rain will fall during drought and all sorts. Basically, its a magical flute. seeing its power, king Sinmun named it “Manpasikjeok”. When they checked his file, it says he’s 70 years old but looks to be in his late 20s. He confirm he’s really 70 and hasn’t aged since 1994 because he’s been using the flute after he took it from his brother who did not believe in its powers and perceive it as a myth. When asked if he killed his brother, he replied with a resounding yes. He said his naive half-brother who bacame a king just because he was a legitimate son, did nothing with it.
The kingdom of Corea, in the winter of 1994, we see Lee Rim, picking up a sword with a inscription that says “FOUR TIGER SWORD”. Then we see the king locking the flute in a glass case. Then he heard gun shots behind his and saw all his guards slaughtered, then Lee Rim came him and killed the king/his brother with the sword before taking the flute. Just then, the young prince Lee Gon came in to see his father laying on the floor dead and told Lee-Rim that he will pay for it, picked up the sword that was used to kill his father and charged towards his uncle, who ducked but the flute got broken in two. Lee-Rim grabbed the young prince and stabbed him in the neck with the broken flute. A mystery man came into the building, mask on his face and a cap, started shooting Lee-Rims men. Seeing this, Lee-Rim left the scene. While laying the the pool of his own blood, the young prince grabbed the half of the flute close to him before the mystery man came to check on him. As the mystery man was getting up, the prince grabbed the ID around the mans neck and it fell to the ground. The ID says SEOUL METROPOLITAN POLICE.
The next day, we get to see the kingdom of Corea properly. it’s just like any other country. They announce in the news that Lee-Rim is now a wanted man. We see him the the forest covered in blood and he accidentally stumbled upon the gateway to another world, which he went through. He found Koreas version of himself in a wheelchair and killed him.
In Corea, the young prince Lee-Gon was made king and while during his time of grieving he met a young boy named Jo Young and they became friends. The corpse of Korea’s version of Lee-Rim washed ashore in corea dressed as Lee-Rim and the conclusion was that he committed suicide. We see a man reading the newspaper that says Lee-Rim is dead, he threw it away angrily and went to work.
Years later, Lee-Rim came to the man and when the man said Lee-Rim hadn’t aged a bit in years, he promised to take the man to a new world. Back in Corea, everyone seems to want the king Lee-Gon to get married but he refused. saying he’d rather focus on his royal duty. Lee-Gon hosted a reading of Alice in Wonderland to children who told him to follow the rabbit. While at a rowing competition, Lee-Gon noticed someone wearing a rabbit sweatshirt and followed but lost the person after a while. He told Jo Young who is now the captain of the royal guard that he’s still looking for his savior from all those years ago and we see Lee-Gon still has the ID card and the name says Jung Tae-eul.
In Korea, we see Tae-eul (who, BTW, is a badass) and her team, carrying out a sting to lure out some men carrying out an illegal gambling operation but they discover a dead body in the trunk instead. In Corea, Lee-Gon saw the rabbit again and followed on his horse when he stumbled upon the gateway and entered and found himself in Korea. As he was riding through traffic, he rode past Tae-eul in her car and when she orders him to stop, he didn’t listen. Tae-eul chased him down and finally got off after seeing her face, looked at her police ID and said shes’s the one he has been looking for and hugged her.
That’s where episode one ended. Not gonna lie, it took me a while to write this because i was trying to get the key point and not make it so convoluted. Although this episode did the whole back and forth thing, its definitely a watch for me. Even during the grieving process for the king, there were still some light hearted moments. All in all, this drama is so far, so good. Can’t wait for the next episode.
