Episode two of Mystic pop-up bar did not disappoint. Fun, refreshing and after the way a very sensitive topic was handled in the last episode, my high hope for this drama keeps getting higher.
Wol-joo and Guibanjang tries to get Kang bae to sign the contract so he can start working for them. But he spots a pesky little detail that says his ability will be enhanced. Kang bae refuses to sign the contract because he was told if he can’t bring the ten people within a month, they won’t get rid of his ability and he’ll be stuck with the enhanced version. Kang bae goes home and the elderly woman Ms Andong that lives next door brings him food. She seems like she looks out for him. He mentions that her daughter Eun-su is getting married soon on May 9th.
In order to get Kang to sign the contract, Wol-joo tried a lot of things but he finally agrees on a trial after she pushed him into the middle of some women. Ms Andong and Eun-su stopped by the mystic pop-up bar for some grilled mackerel and Eun-su happened to mention that her mother used to run a grilled mackerel bar. After Eun-su left due to a previous arrangement to meet some people, Kang-bae touches Ms Andong and she revealed a lot of things.
Ms Andong tells them that when she used to run a grilled mackerel bar, a young orphaned woman worked for her. Her named was Lee Sun-hwa. They were both quite close. One day a man called Ko Dong-gil came into the bar and it was love at first sight for Ms Andong. This man kept coming to the bar and all the while, she thinks he’s coming because of her. she was crushed when she found out the Sun-hwa is carrying his baby and they are getting married. After Sun-hwa had her baby, a daughter, the jealousy and anger in her grew and she told lies about sun-hwa to Dong-gil. That night, he left his wife, accusing her of having an affair and Sun-hwa died in a hit and run while trying to run after her husband that night, leaving their baby alone. Because of this guilt, Ms Andong raised the baby Eun-su as her own but never told anyone and now, she just want Eun-su to know her father but Ms Andong has had no luck finding him one more thing, she dying from lung cancer.
After hearing this, Wol-joo kicked her out of the bar, saying she can’t help a murderer and that her actions that night destroyed a family. Saying kicking out people who need help is not what he signed up for, Kang-bae stormed out. The next day, he sneaked into the bar and stole the special drink and went home only to find Ms Andong collapsed on the floor. He rushed her to the hospital and was joined by Eun-su who is now aware of her mother’s illness. Kang-bae gets a call from Guibanjang asking him if he took the special drink. He tells Kang-bae he can not drink it. Before Kang gets back inside the hospital room, Eun-su already drank it thinking it was water.
Not knowing what to do, Kang-bae touches her and he ends up in her dream. While trying to find his way around, he was joined by Wol-joo and together, they watch Eun-su’s dream. She dreamt about her life with her mother and how loving and caring she is. When they came to, Kang-bae tried to bargain with Wol-joo to grant Ms Andong’s wish and he’ll sign the contract. Before they could do anything, she dies. Chief Yeom comes to collect her soul but Wol-joo tells him he can take her tomorrow.
After some findings, they find Ko Dong-gil. He’s old a suffers from amnesia after trying to take his own life years ago. So he doesn’t remember he’s married and has a daughter. Wol-joo, Guibanjang and Kang-bae tried to jog his memory but to no avail. They all decided to go into his subconscious, which looked like an infinite spiral staircase. They unlock the memory of his wife and daughter that he locked away. Dong-gil goes and meet Eun-su.
Surprisingly, after hearing everything, Eun-su did not get angry but instead, apologies for not been a better daugher. Ms Andong finally passes on the the afterlife with Chief Yeom and was surprised that Sun-hwa was waiting for her on the other side. With tears in her eyes, she apologized to Sun-hwa who hugged her and told thanked her for looking after her daughter and tells her she’s forgiven and she can rest in peace.
Kang-bae finally signed the contract and after a few drinks, he asked Wol-joo why a hundred thousand people? She tells him that it’s because she killed a hundred thousand people. After Wol-joo died years ago, she appeared in front of Yeomradaewang who told her that because she hung herself under the sacred tree that has been defending the country for years, it suffered bad luck and that war came to the country and a hundred thousand people died. So, because of this, Wol-joo had to go back to heart and atone for her sins by settling the grudges of a hundred thousand people. Wol-joo refused was changed her mind when a scroll was thrown to her and she read what it says. With tears in hears eyes, she agrees to her punishment.
This Episode once again dealt with something most people don’t think about. Watching what you say. Because of what Ms Andong said, a family was destroyed and she had to live the rest of her life with the guilt. Swords and guns are not the only weapons that kill. All in all, i love this drama and i can’t wait for the next episode.
